چکیده

Objectives: We evaluated the efficacy of CO2 laser myringotomy combined with adenoidectomy in children with serous otitis media (SOM) unresponsive to medical therapy and compared the recurrences in the follow-up period with the control group who underwent adenoidectomy and ventilation tube (VT) insertion. Patients and Methods: The CO2 laser myringotomy group included 25 children with a mean age of 5.6 years and there were 10 children with a mean age of 6.3 years in the VT control group. The laser used was a Sharplan 1030 CO2 laser, attached to Zeiss Universal S3 operation microscope with a 300 mm objective, using a Microspot optical delivery system. Results: Mean (±SD) healing time was 13 (±2.16) days in 4 ears with myringotomies less than 2 mm diameters, and 25 (±2.34) days in 46 ears with myringotomies with 2 mm diameters. During the 6 months follow-up period there were 11 recurrences (22%) in CO2 laser group and 4 recurrences (20%) in the control group, which was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Conclusion: We prefer laser myringotomy in SOM cases who do not need long time middle ear ventilation; we use the ventilation tubes in cases with thick mucoid effusion and recurrent effusion after laser myringotomy.

The Effects of Myringotomy and Ventilation Tube Insertion on the Hearing Level of the Patients with Serous Otitis Media Referring to 5th Azar Hospital in Gorgan, Iran (1999-2011)

Background and objective: The eustachian tube (pharyngotympanic tube) connects the middle ear cavity to the nasopharynx, and its dysfunction leads to the accumulation of fluids in the middle ear and hearing loss. In such cases, irresponsiveness to pharmaceutical treatments urges myringotomy combined with ventilation tube insertion. Given the importance of the operation outcomes, the present stu...

Comparison of Adenoidectomy and Myringot-omy with and without Tube Placement in the Short Term Hearing Status of Children with Otitis Media with Effusion: A Preliminary Re-port

Background: Otitis media with effusion (OME) is the most frequent indication for surgery in children. Some surgeons prefer to use adenoidectomy and myringotomy with tympanostomy tubes insertion to prevent the sequelae of the disease and also more improvement of hearing. The aim of this study is to compare adenoidectomy-myringotomy with adenoidectomy-myringotomy plus tympanostomy tube in the man...

Comparison of Adenoidectomy and Myringotomy with and without Tube Placement in the Short Term Hearing Status of Children with Otitis Media with Effusion: A Preliminary Report

Dear Editor, I read with enthusiasm the article entitled "Comparison of Adenoidectomy and Myringotomy with and without Tube Placement in the Short Term Hearing Status of Children with Otitis Media with Effusion" by Drs. Shishegar and Hoghoghi, which was published in IJMS 2007; 32:168-171. I think there are grave misconceptions and doubtful materials in the article. I also disagree with some of ...

Tympanic membrane healing in myringotomies performed with argon laser or microknife: an experimental study in rats.

UNLABELLED Secretory otitis media (SOM) and recurrent acute otitis media (RAOM) may require surgical treatment to proper ventilate the middle ear. Incisional myringotomy is usually done under microscopy with a micro-knife, but it remains patent for just a few days. Recent research indicates that laser assisted myringotomies remain open much longer, allowing middle ear ventilation and healing. ...
